 RUBY SHAY

Ruby Shay is a First Nations singer-songwriter from the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia. Celebrated for her earnest storytelling and deeply personal songs, her music is heavily influenced by her upbringing and view of the world. Ruby's childhood was difficult, as she grew up in foster care, bouncing from place to place.

While proudly connected to her Boorooberongal, Dharug heritage, she was raised and accepted within Dharawal and Yuin communities This rich cultural background, and the therapeutic solace that she found in music from a young age, has profoundly influenced her art. She began playing the keyboard at six as an escape from the outside world, and then also taught herself guitar in her late teens, eventually discovering her passion for songwriting. Ruby's music, inspired by deeply connected artists like Missy Higgins, Sara Bareilles, and Fanny Lumsden, is known for its emotive and connected storytelling. So much so, that Ruby was named as the recipient of the 2024 Indigenous Storytellers Scholarship.

Drawing on her unique perspective and life experiences, her songs often start from deep personal spaces, evolving into powerful compositions.

After years of toying with the option, Ruby began releasing her original music seriously in October 2023 with her debut single "Sinner." Following this, she released "When They Call Me" and “Cooler”, both of which were featured on ABC's Saturday Night Country with Beccy Cole. All three of her singles have also been included in ABC's coveted Grassroots program and playlist.

In less than 12 months, she has racked up over 25,000 streams online. "Cooler" also received a write-up on the well-respected Countrytown blog, further highlighting Ruby's rising prominence. Having honed her craft for nearly 17 years, Ruby and her band, The Red Horse, are currently recording an album set for release later this year.  A collection of songs that will surely see her star rise even further.

Ruby Shay's journey from her culturally rich, but personally troubled upbringing to becoming an acclaimed independent artist, highlights her talent and determination. Her songs continue to touch hearts and connect with fans worldwide, showcasing the transformative power of her artistry.
